Principal's Message, Friday 5 March 2021

Daniel Wilson —

Dear parents/caregivers

Thank you to all our school community for assisting us to switch back seamlessly to a Covid Level 2 operating environment.  Like all of you I am looking forward to some positive news in the near future and a shift back to Level 1.

As a school we work incredibly hard to support students with additional learning needs.  Some students that attend Nayland College are funded for additional support from the Ministry of Education, however, the vast majority are not.  As we philosophically believe that all students deserve every opportunity to succeed, we fund additional support for students in many different ways, including one-to-one classroom support. With the loss of locally raised income from international students,  we are now routinely having to spend over-budget to ensure students get the support they deserve.  I am calling on the Ministry of Education to lower their funding thresholds and ensure schools are appropriately funded to support all students. The linked article gives more detail.

The Nayland College uniform looks great when it is worn correctly and with pride. It gives our students a sense of belonging and creates an identity for the school in the community. As it gets colder it is not uncommon for students to start challenging our uniform expectations. We have a very flexible uniform and our leadership team, deans and counsellors are available to support students to find correct items when required.

Below are some general reminders and clarifications from the senior leadership team:

  • Uniform pants/trousers/shorts/skirts must be official Nayland College uniform. Black jeans, track pants etc. are not acceptable.
  • Hoodies and sweatshirts are not to be worn.
  • A plain black jacket is acceptable (i.e. puffer jacket). Please note that vests provide very little additional warmth.
  • Socks should be black.
  • Shoes should be black (a small logo is acceptable).
  • Enclosed shoes must be worn in the school’s labs, kitchens and workshops.

To add to our wide range of uniform items, you are now able to pre-order yet another option that can be worn during the school day. We are extending our sports apparel to allow students to purchase an optional high-quality hoodie.  All students can purchase the item through this link.

We appreciate your ongoing support from home.
