Pathway + Programme Update

Nayland College Pathways+ —

Our Year 13 students this year have been visiting local buisnesses, participating in work placements and listening to a variety of guest speakers.

Alongside this they have been exposed to industry knowledge, career pathways, work ethics and employment processes. All of this is valuable learning for the transition out of school and into future careers. Some of the businesses we have visited are:

Nelson Airport, Honest Lawyer, Police Station, Port Nelson, Joinery & Design, Volunteer Nelson, I-Site Information Centre, Defence Force, Mega 10, Nelson Pine and Trinder’s Engineering

Currently out of the 49 students who started the programme, 10 have been employed, or are in/exploring tertiary education and 35 have had work placements. Most of our students now have a strong idea of what they are doing in 2018.

This term Nathan Fa’avae visited our group and shared his story on being a professional World Adventure Racer. Nathan is an ex Nayland College student who believes in following your passion and had purposeful conversations with our students.

Tim Pannell has talked to our students this term about the Transportation Industry. He indicated that there is a shortage of drivers, approximately 1000 needed nationally. We have organised a course for 7 of our students to gain their forklift ticket, which will hopefully open a range of opportunities.

Our aim is for all our students to be well prepared for the next big step of leaving school and entering the world of work and/or tertiary education. We are currently actively refining CV’s, applying for courses, exploring job perspectives and working on gaining Level 3.

The Pathway+ and Gateway team are always willing to help the students learn, prepare and grow with the continued support of the community.
