Te Tai Poutini Field Trip

Nayland College —

Over the first weekend in March, our international students travelled to Te Tai Poutini (the West Coast) for an action-packed, two-day adventure.

The students participated in a variety of excursions including black water rafting, feeding eels, trekking through a glow worm cave and more. We caught up with Julia Nicholae (Year 12) and Keyi Jiang (Year 10) to get the full report.

What made you decide to go on the weekend trip to the West Coast?

Julia - I didn't pick Outdoor Education or any other subject with trips, so I thought I'll take any opportunity to go on a trip with school. Another thing that influenced my decision were definitely my friends. We all decided together if we wanted to go, and we did!

Keyi - Because it [sounded] very good. Also, I like to trip somewhere with my friends, so I would like to enjoy life in New Zealand more.

What was your favourite part of the weekend away?

Julia - I didn't just have one favourite part, but so many. I really enjoyed the cave trip. It was educational while also being fun. When we were in the water, laying in our rings, looking up and seeing glow worms, it was magical, and I could have laid there forever.

Keyi - In the West Coast, everything [was] very funny! I like to spend time with my friends, so I think that is my highlight of the weekend.

Julia - It didn't.

Keyi - Regarding feelings of gratitude, it was very similar between my home country, Japanese school event.

Where would you like to visit next in New Zealand?

Julia - I'd just go anywhere.

Keyi - North Island.
