Daniel Wilson —

Dear parents/caregivers

Over the coming months the Ministry of Education is undertaking a review of the NCEA qualification system to ensure it remains valued, relevant and robust for young people, their families, whānau, employers, tertiary education organisations, iwi and communities. I have recently been appointed as the Engagement Lead for the NCEA Review in the Nelson/Marlborough/West Coast region and as part of that process I will be facilitating a number of community events. A Regional Kaiārahi has also been appointed to liaise specifically with the Māori community.

The NCEA Review provides an exciting opportunity to explore how NCEA can be strengthened to realise its potential, improve the experiences of New Zealanders who use the qualification, and discuss its place and purpose in the wider education system. The review team have identified five principles for engagement; wellbeing, equity, coherence, pathways and credibility. Please see information attached regarding the process so far.

The review will include public engagement at a regional and national level. Families/whānau and students can engage with the process in a number of ways, including through competitions and public meetings (dates to be confirmed). Look out for these opportunities over the coming weeks and months.

Over the past week we have been trialing a new way of sending communication home via our student management system. This was only partially successful. However, we have made some significant changes as a result of the trial. If you have received an email from an @nayland.school.kiwi address, it is no longer valid. Any responses will not be received by the school. You can continue to contact staff members at the usual @nayland.school.nz address. Please note that if you receive an email from no-reply@nayland.school.nz, replies are not monitored.

Good luck to all of the students who have now started winter sport. I am also looking forward to the Tawa College exchange next week.

Nga mihi nui

Daniel Wilson
