30 students are attending Trades Academy this year, gaining practical experience at NMIT each Friday in their chosen trade. A number of students have also taken part in multi day courses at Whenua Iti Outdoors

Trades Academy courses which students are currently undertaking at NMIT include:

Automotive or Mechanical Engineering, Building or Joinery, Beauty, Hairdressing, Hospitality,  Creative Design for Hair and Make Up, Art 2D & 3D and Health and Support Services.

Whenua Iti courses in Term 1 included Manaaki Tapoi (cultural tourism) and Predator Control (& conservation) which will continue next term as block residential courses.  Students are also keen to commence courses in Environmental Science and Adventure Tourism Leadership at Whenua Iti next term.  

Courses at both Trades Academy and Whenua Iti are all free and are a practical hands-on way of gaining useful skills to help further study or get a job straight out of school for senior students.
