Message from the Acting Principal

Hannah Banks —

Over the last fortnight we have had some lovely opportunities to meet with parents and whānau at our EME (Excellence & Merit Awards) evening and our ESOL dinner. Both of these events were fantastic opportunities to celebrate our students, their cultures and their success. Thank you to everyone who attended and supported these events.

Our achievement conferences finished up this week and the feedback we have had from parents, staff and students has been really positive. We really value taking time to individually support our students to achieve success and set meaningful goals for the year. Our next opportunity to meet with parents & caregivers will be at subject interviews taking place next term. Another round of effort grades will be completed next week and our Kaiarahi (tutor teachers) are continuing to provide intentional academic mentoring support to our junior classes through our Puna Ako programme. A reminder that our Careers Advisors Alana Wall and Rachael Purdie are available at any time for senior students to make an appointment, as are our Kaiarataki (Deans).

We have had an amazing amount of sporting events and success over the past two weeks. With too many to list, you can read all about them here. Congratulations to every student who has achieved recent success. I also want to wish everybody heading out to tournament events next week, the very best of luck!

Yesterday, Nayland College hosted around 100 Year 12 and 13 students from schools across Te Tau Ihu at Pūtangitangi Greenmeadows Centre for a Top of the South Leadership Forum. Organised by Nayland College Deputy Principal Alice Scott, the day was a fantastic opportunity for our budding leaders to meet with students from other schools and develop their leadership capabilities.

As you will see in our newsletter, rehearsals are underway for our upcoming musical production, The Addams Family, with shows running 16-18 May at the Theatre Royal, so save the date!

With so much success already this term, and the range of opportunities that are available for students both in and out of the classroom, I would like to take the opportunity to thank our staff who work tirelessly behind the scenes to provide engaging learning at school and who regularly go above and beyond to provide such a wide range of opportunities for our students.

Finally, we want to wish our two Nayland College Sailing teams all the best as they compete in the regional competition this weekend, and good luck to our Girls A Volleyball team who are off to the nationals in Palmerston North next week!

Ngā mihi nui,

Hannah Banks
