Students practice their Spanish ordering icecream

Cristina Armstrong —

Senior Spanish students had the opportunity to take their language skills into a real life situation, learning how to order an icecream at Pinguinos last week.

Last Friday senior Spanish students went to visit Pinguinos. Pinguinos is run by Coki an Argentinian woman. Students were able to practice their Spanish in a real-life situation. This was a fantastic opportunity for our students who in other years have been involved in student exchange programme with Chile. The programme is on hold at the moment due to the corona virus pandemic.

Despite using Spanish in the classroom, having to speak to someone else is a big jump for any language learner. The previous lesson they all had a practice run with the Colombian students. Despite some nervousness all students succeeded to ask to try a flavour and then order their ice-cream and pay for it. A favourite among the group was the new hot cross bun flavour. ¡Qué rico!

As we prepped, we learnt how Spanish in different countries has many different words, we specifically had to learn how to say scoop (bocha) and cone (cucurucho) in Argentinian, which is different to how it is said in Spain or Colombia or Chile. We are now looking forward and planning our next outing!
