Full house for House Day

Circuit Journalism Club —

NayCol’s annual House Day took place on the 19th of February. The aim for the day was to build relationships and house spirit in an atmosphere of friendly competition between the four houses: Draco, Pegasus, Phoenix and Aquila.

Here student reporter Aleisha Smith from Draco House covers the beginning of the day:

The Field Fiesta was the first event of House Day 2019 to take place. Masses of students dressed in varying purples and greens gathered behind the Draco Dragon head on Nayland College's top field, seeking shade where possible. The air was filled with loud cheers and chanting as the first challenge began: seeing how much water each house could put into a bucket after completing an obstacle course, which involved the intrepid participants running over benches and mats, cups of water in hand. It was truly great to see everyone within their houses supporting and encouraging one another, regardless of whether they knew each other or not.

And here are the thoughts of some of  the many other participants:

“House Day this year was probably my favourite one so far. I had such a great time and was really proud of Aquila. It also made me really happy to see so many people getting involved, especially the year nines - I hope it carries on throughout the year!” - Sophie Hampson, Year 12 (Aquila)

"It was really cool at the Field Fiesta seeing so many people participate and when we did the haka the last three times, I had goosebumps from how loud and how awesome we were, so that was really cool" - Mrs. Gravett (Draco)

"It’s very exciting. In Japan we only celebrate festivals so we don't do anything like this at school" - Konoha Muraoka, Year 12 (Aquila)

“I loved throwing the water balloons at the teachers.” - Anonymous

“This was the best house day” - Ben Dowdle, Year 13 (Pegasus student leader)

“I like everyone working together and being happy” - Mrs Scott (Pegasus House Dean)

"House Day has been pretty cool; everyone is participating." - Anthony Robinson, Year 9 (Draco)

“There are so many people out here and it’s awesome” - Sam, Year 13

“It was fun watching everyone enjoying themselves while they took part in the activities. I feel like I missed out by not taking part more. Next year I will try my best to really get involved in House Day” - Ronan Gridley, Year 11 (Aquila)

And the last word goes to organiser and head of Phoenix house Jo Cotton:

"What an amazing day had by all! It started with the field fiesta where there was so much energy, excitement and passion for the houses that spread colour all over the field. Students and teachers were getting involved and working hard to win challenges where participation was the key.

The day progressed with so many events that really pushed the houses, whether it be the water challenges, the variety of activities at the culture clash, or the mana, passion and pride displayed in the haka.

The day really met it goal of creating a Nayland College culture - whanaungatanga."
