Nayland College Official —

This edition we resume our moment with a member of Nayland College's staff. Here's what we got from a moment with PE and health teacher Stephen Teece.

How long have you been teaching and how long have you been at Nayland College?

I have been teaching for 10 years now and started my teaching career at Nayland College.

What are your passions and areas of expertise?

Inside of school my passions are teaching the Level 2 PE course as it has a good range of topics covered, the Kaiteriteri camp and a couple of opportunities for students to ski or snowboard.

I would say my expertise is understanding and working with students that need extra support to achieve their potential at school. I have taught the Year 11 Ara (Pathways) class for a few years now and each year I adapt my teaching style slightly or program to suit the class' needs.

Outside of school my passions are skiing, snowboarding, scuba diving, and anything outside really. My family is also my passion, and I’m working on my expertise of being a Dad to four kids!

Who has inspired you on your own learning journey?

I was always encouraged by my Mum to try new things and she 'usually' supported new ideas and initiatives I had. In terms of my learning journey, ex-Nayland teachers Malcolm Ives and Steve Garside had a teaching style I really enjoyed and both these teachers were highly relatable and down-to-earth people.

What is your favorite thing about the school?

The diversity of students is fantastic and it’s great to see the interaction between diverse individuals and groups, particularly in the senior school. I always appreciate walking through school and being acknowledged by either students that I teach, or have previously taught, or know somehow. I like the vibe and culture here due to both students and staff.

What are your ambitions for the future?

I enjoy teaching and the range of students I relate with each day, so I plan to continue with this. It would be great to do an overseas teaching exchange with my family, so will keep this as a possibility if the timing is right. We also live in the country on a property with protected native bush, so part of my long-term goal is to tackle and get rid of invasive species like Old Man's Beard and blackberry.  Any volunteers?
