Why did you decide to be a teacher – and what drew towards becoming a Maths teacher in particular? I decided to become a maths teacher way back in 1997. I have always enjoyed the beauty and challenge of Mathematics.

What do you like about teaching, and teaching at Nayland specifically? I always enjoy seeing the different perspectives through the students' eyes. Young people can be very creative, thoughtful and energetic. Teaching at Nayland allows me to see this positive energy every day.

What do you like to do in your spare time? In my spare time I like to run, read books or just chill with a crossword. I'll also admit to watching really good maths videos on YouTube by Matt Parker or Vi Hart.

What are your passions and areas of expertise? I enjoy exploring different areas of the South Island with my family. Professionally, I specifically enjoy Algebra and Calculus.

What were you like as a student at school? I was an OK student. Looking back now, I was probably immature and annoying at times. For the most part I enjoyed learning.

Who has inspired you on your own learning journey? Where do I begin? Stellar mathematicians like Vi Hart, Matt Parker and the whole crew at Numberphile (YouTube channel). Of course, Salman Khan of Khan Academy. Other maths teachers like Subash Chandar in Auckland. Many students throughout my career have inspired me. And finally, people who continue to fight the good fight like Noam Chomsky and many others.

Describe yourself with three words: I am a rebel.
