Perfecting education in maths

Duncan McKinlay —

As Nayland College moves towards fully integrating BYOD into Years 9 and 11 in 2020, each newsletter, we will be profiling how our staff and students are using this technology to improve teaching and learning. This time we stopped by Mr Crawford’s Year 9 maths class.

In this class, 9I are using a mix of traditional resources and an online learning tool called Education Perfect for their starter activity, which involves solving a number of numerical puzzles. This provides diagnostic data, that their teacher can use to further individualise their students’ learning. The students can get immediate feedback on their work and the activities are then differentiated in real time to target the students’ needs.

Education Perfect is already used heavily throughout the school in the science and maths departments. Next year, with our transition towards BYOD in Years 9 and 11, the school has purchased Education Perfect licenses for the entire school. Not only will this allow different subject departments to collaborate further on teaching and learning, it will also provide a further way of communicating with parents and whanau about the progress of our learners.

Education Perfect is just one of the many tools Nayland College teachers can use to further their students’ learning. At the core of our blended learning approach, is the idea there is no one learning tool that will suit all learners, but rather a variety of tools, both online and offline, that we can use to cater for a range of learning needs. We use programs such as Education Perfect in tandem with a variety of other teaching and learning activities.
