A big welcome to our new students

Duncan McKinlay —

Tuesday was a big day at Nayland College as the school welcomed over 400 new students, 22 new teachers and 8 new support staff.

This new cohort included 350 new year nine students who were starting their first day at high school. All new students were welcomed into the Nayland whanau with a mihi whakatau in the hall from Matua Bruno Watkins and student Kaitunaki James Reneti.

New students were also officially welcomed by principal Daniel Wilson, who not only greeted the students, but their parents and whanau as well, urging them to contribute to the learning environment. "We want our learning at Nayland College to be a genuine partnership. We want to have as much communication about learning as possible with you and involve you in the life of the school as much as possible," Mr Wilson said.

Also present in the hall were 50 year thirteen students, who were spending the day training to be peer support mentors to the new year nine cohort.

After leaving the hall, the year nine students met with their tutor teacher, who they spent the rest of the day with, taking them through a full orientation.
