A First for Nayland College

Verity Davidson —

After our success at the SGCNZ University of Otago Shakespeare Festival in Wellington over the Queen’s Birthday weekend, three of our students have been selected to attend the Shakespeare Globe Centre New Zealand’s National Shakespeare Schools Production 2022 in Dunedin in October.

This is the first time that three students from Nayland have been selected and is in fact rare for any school. Of the 48 students selected only 3 schools have 2 students selected and only one other has 3 selected.

Our successful students are : Anushka Castaing, Molly Clarke and Tiaki Sharp. Unfortunately Anushka had to turn down the opportunity as she has won a Celestielle Charitable Trust Travel Scholarship to travel to Asia in October.

In the words of the students:

Anushka: ‘I feel so happy that my hard work has been acknowledged and it is a real privilege and honour to be recognised for such a small supporting role. I’m gutted that I can’t take this opportunity because of my other scholarship (which I’m really excited about too).’

Molly: ‘I’m really looking forward to this opportunity. It is quite validating of our hard work which has paid off.’

Tiaki: ‘I am thrilled. For me, this was the culmination of 7 years of speech and drama training, specifically in Shakespeare and the attainment of a lifelong dream.’
