Former refugee students share their experiences in educational films

Shellee Hall —

In support of the new Aotearoa Histories curriculum, two Nayland College ākonga were invited to participate in a valuable national resource on our nation's migration history.

The films created will be available to all schools in New Zealand in 2023. The experiences of these two students as former refugees, who are now New Zealanders, provide an insightful understanding of their journey to and life in Aotearoa.

In each episode, viewers are invited into the homes and personal lives of former refugees. Our Nayland College families shared their own stories of migration, personal history, identity, and adapting to life in Aotearoa. The purpose of this series was to introduce students to the idea that many diverse communities make up the fabric of New Zealand. Like the great Polynesian voyagers of the past, people continue to come to Aotearoa in search of a new life. These videos explore the unique cultures that resettle here and their reasons for making the journey to begin a new life in Aotearoa.
