Outward Bound Whakatipu Course

Outward Bound —

For students on vocational pathways to employment. Students to register interest at the Careers Centre by Wednesday 23 March. Flyer attached.

Outward Bound is one of New Zealand’s leading personal development organisations. Our focus lies in building transferable skills and attitudes that remain far beyond a participant’s time with us. Lessons learnt are applicable to work, study, home and they last for life.

What is the Outward Bound Whakatipu course?

Whakatipu means Growth. With a focus on the key skills that today’s employers are looking for, participants grow skills in work ethic, communication, problem solving and decision making, teamwork, self-management, confidence and resilience.

Within a supportive, caring, and safe environment participants experience activities such as sailing, tramping, rock climbing, high ropes and kayaking. Each activity is a vehicle for learning and participants debrief through guided facilitation and learn how their contribution helped to achieve an outcome.

Who is this for?

In Partnership with the Ministry of Education, the Whakatipu course is designed for secondary school students on vocational pathways for their transition to employment. The course provides an opportunity for students to grow and develop transferrable skills and attitudes for work as they transition into employment.

Participants must:

  • Be aged between 16 – 18 years old.
  • Be engaged with and supported by an employer or have a pathway to employment.
  • Be committed to their personal development.
  • Meet Outward Bound’s screening guidelines.

How to nominate someone?

Students are nominated for the Whakatipu course by Work Brokers and Principal Advisors, Secondary Transitions (PA ST’s), Work Brokers and PA ST’s submit a short bio on the potential candidate to Krishan Kumar, Community Development Partner, via email to kkumar@outwardbound.co.nz

The bio should include:

  • Students full name and date of birth
  • Summary of their level of engagement with an employer
  • Summary of why that student would like to attend and why they have been nominated
  • How the student will be supported after completing the course

How much does this cost?

Thanks to Outward Bound’s generous donors and the Ministry of Education, each student nominated to attend the Whakatipu course will receive a scholarship valued at $3,246 per person.

This leaves a remaining fee $250 for each student as well as the additional costs of transport to Picton for course start and the cost of a doctor’s appointment to complete the Outward Bound Medical Form.

What dates are available?

The Whakatipu course will be held four times in 2022 with two groups of 12 attending in June and two groups of 12 attending in August. Each course is 8 days in length and will start and finish at the Picton Interislander Ferry Terminal.

Each region participating in the programme in 2022 has been pre-allocated spaces on each course and these will be discussed directly with a representative from each region involved.
