Careers opportunities in demand

Andrea Hawkes —

Many senior students have taken the opportunity to attend courses, or career trips out in Term 1, which will help guide their future career direction

Courses held at Nayland College include a 3-day Learners Drivers Licence course through Dunn's Driving School (thanks to funding from Nelson City Council), which has resulted in many of these students gaining their Learners Licence.  A 1-day Hazard & Risk Management Course was run by SafetynAction for Gateway students, which focused on safety consciousness in the work place and is a valuable qualification for future employment.

NMIT Te Pukenga hosted Nayland College students for hands-on sessions in Building, Joinery and Computer Generated Imagery/Information Technology, so students could gain knowledge about potential careers, study and apprenticeship training.

Guest speakers for Pathway classes included the NZ Defence Force Recruiter, Roy Wattie.  The Navy then hosted Year 13 students: Eli Wright, Caitlin & Charlotte McKnight who took the opportunity to travel to Picton for an interactive day with Navy survey staff. This involved a ride on an inflatable boat, learning about careers in the Navy and assisting with surveying.

Other trips included visits to Whanake Youth in Stoke, who provide youth health and wellbeing services.  A Civil Construction day out was arranged by Nelson Regional Development Agency, which enabled visits to worksites, such as the Water Treatment Plant, Waste Water Plant, new subdivisions under construction and a Crushing Plant.  It was a great way for students to see different trades at work, ask questions and be inspired for their own career journey.

Students should keep checking the daily school notices for many great career opportunities coming up throughout the year.
