Principal's Message, Friday 1 April 2022

Daniel Wilson —

Our Term 2 focus will be around ensuring students are back at school, learning in-person.

As you may have seen, in the last week the media has reported a reduction in the number of daily cases of Covid-19.  While we know that cases at Nayland College will rise and fall with that of the level in our community, health experts continue to tell us that children are much more likely to be exposed to Covid-19 in the community than at school.

Focus on attendance

Our focus for Term 2 will be on ensuring that our students are at school learning as much as possible.  We know that, for the majority of our students, the best place possible for wellbeing and learning is at school with their friends, teachers and other school staff. We also have very good systems in place to keep everyone as safe as possible.  This is why the government has determined that we should remain open at the Red setting of the Covid Protection Framework.

Vaccinations

We know that being fully vaccinated and boosted reduces the risk of severe illness due to COVID-19. We are encouraging all adults in our school who are working with students to be vaccinated, including their booster. We also continue to support the public health campaign for young people to be vaccinated.  The following videos may be useful:

Mask wearing and other hygiene practices

Mask wearing for our students and staff remains in place in indoor spaces and we are trying to ensure there is as much ventilation across the school as possible.  We also continue to focus on basic hygiene such as washing hands regularly, covering any coughs and sneezes, and cleaning surfaces regularly.

Student isolation

From time to time some students will need to isolate at home. This is in line with Government advice and if this happens, we have class Teams set up to support them to continue learning at home and to minimise any interruption.

According to the Paediatric Society of NZ, for most children COVID-19 is a mild illness. It can usually be managed through simple measures such as keeping fluids up and taking over the counter medicines such as paracetamol or ibuprofen.

If you have any concerns about sending your child to school, please get in touch with us. We want to do all we can to ensure our students are back at school and engaging in learning with their friends.

Ngā mihi
