Sea grass planting a muddy exercise

Nayland College Official —

On July 31st a combined Nayland group of NEST members, level 1 primary industries students and year 10 horticulture students took part in a sea grass planting initiative.

A small communication mix-up with the council meant the group headed off from school thinking they were going to a tree planting, only to find out the estuary was their destination and mud the name of the game!

The approximately 700 sea grasses planted into the mud will benefit the estuarine environment, as they assist in trapping sediments, increasing aquatic habitat, and reducing erosion.

The students planted the grasses in conjunction with Nelson City Council and Enviroschools.
