College cleans up at Cawthron Scitec Expo

Tena Stanbridge —

Nayland College won a stack of awards at the Cawthron Scitec award ceremony on the 24th October.

Year 13 students Aimee Bartlett and Matthew Edmonds won five awards each and both came away with some prize money.

Both Aimee and Matthew used their Level 3 biology experiments on mussels as the basis for their science projects to win NMIT Aquaculture Awards, Plant and Food Research Awards and Best Biology Investigation Awards.

Aimee went on to use one of her psychology internal assessments as another project, while  Matthew used his earth and marine one to each win Research and Science Silver and Gold Awards.

Joseph Amos also won big with his woodwork project, collecting the prestigious Nelson Pine Award and Year 9 Pippa Sussex won prize money and a Soroptimist Award for her Art in Science entry.

Chicchan Needham and Lyn Yokoyama won bronze in the Year 9 and 10 sections, while Lovinia Pluck won silver and a Soroptimist Award in the same section.

Jess Scott and Lois Bruekel picked up the Royal Aeronautical Society Award for their project, Swim Like a Shark.

Overrall, it was a very successful evening for Nayland College, even if it didn't win any of the three Supreme Awards offering prize money of $500 each. Maybe next year – the prize money is there for the taking!
