Winter Tournament Sport Results

Dayna Whiting - Sports Director —

Nayland had a successful week away at tournament. There were four teams that travelled all over the South Island:Netball Senior A, Football Boys 1st XI, Basketball Senior Boys and Football Girls XI

The Netball team had an outstanding performance improving from their previous years placing of 17th to finishing in 4th place in the B grade competition. The team grew from strength to strength as the tournament went on. They played Gore high School in the 3rd and 4th play off where they had previously lost to them by 10 goals only to lose the 3rd place promotion spot by 5 goals in a tough fought match. Exciting to see where Netball will head in following years!

The Basketball Senior Boys team had a tough start to the tournament suffering 2 earlier losses however they were quick to improve and won their next few matches.  After losing an extremely close match with region rivals Nelson Boys College by 1 point, the team ended finishing 12th overall out of 24 teams.

The Football Boys 1st XI went off to a flying start finishing 2nd in their pool play which saw them through to quarter finals. They had a tough cross over and lost their quarter and played off from 5th-8th. The team which was full of year 13 players finished strong with a dominate last performance placing them 7th overall.

The combined Football Girls 1st XI team had a tough start after only having the full team together 2 hours before the first game. The team suffered a tough first loss however put on strong performances in their next two games to finish 2nd in the pool which would have saw them through to quarter finals. however with the team being a combined they could not proceed through to playoffs and were place in the bottom 8. The team ended up finishing 12th losing one of their games in an exciting penalty shoot out.

On behalf of Nayland College and all the players I would like to thank the coaching staff and management for their on going support and time that they put into these teams. It definitely does not go unnoticed and know that these teams would not have been where they were with out you all. Congratulations to all players, coaches and manages on a successful week!
