Catch all your favourite Nayland College Sports updates from the last fortnight here.
Basketball, Squash, Supernet, Futsal, and Swimming have been the focus of our sports column this week, showcasing some great individual talent and team efforts.
Basketball
The Senior Boys Basketball team toured Wellington last weekend and earlier this week. Despite travel issues on Saturday that caused them to miss the first game and endure a 12-hour journey from Nelson to Wellington, the team remained focused and positive. They played four games, winning three against Hutt International, Scot's College, and St Bernard's College. They had one close loss, 79-83, to Newlands College. Throughout the tour, the team demonstrated significant growth and learned valuable lessons.
TSS Squash
Tasman Secondary School Squash was a huge success this year with Nayland entering seven teams across the boys and girls divisions. Our Nayland Kokako Girls team, which included Serina Carter and Kloe Freeman, won Division Two! Well done to all who participated. It was a fun day out at the Nelson Squash club.
TSS Junior Supernet
TSS Junior Supernet was a fantastic day out for four of our junior netball teams. Supernet is a day run in tournament format for teams who are travelling to SISS (South Island Secondary Schools) to practise in a tournament environment, and all teams played three games in the one day.
There was also a grade for Junior B teams to be able to experience this tournament environment to foster development. We saw so much success throughout the day in the form of teams coming together and making stronger connections, having a lot of fun together as a team, displaying great camaraderie and sportsmanship, and there were some wins on the scoreboard also.
We also sent five senior students as umpires: Tyler Pitihira, Vanessa Bell, Phillipa Bromley, Ayva Wikaira-Duncan and Mariah Tunagaga. They did a fantastic job and we saw their confidence grow over the course of the day.
Ayla Dewson and Grace Turner stepped up to coach our 9B team and they did a superb job! This 9B team played with great spirit and went from strength the strength throughout the day and were a joy to watch. Well done to everyone who played, umpired and coached at Junior Supernet, you all represented Nayland well.
Jana Polglase (9A netball coach), also had the following to say, "The Year 9A team stepped up after having a tough start to the season and played three strong games of netball. There were some nail biting moments and the girls held their heads high and fought strong to the end of the day, taking away a well deserved win against Garin College with the winning goal being scored in the final five seconds of the game".
TSS Futsal
Tasman Schools Senior Futsal was held on Monday 17 June. Five teams from Nayland College had a great day competing. It was fantastic to have 40 students representing Nayland including a team of our international students.
The international team consisted of Bruno Assalin Alves, Till Bahr, Lionel Bollier, Lasse Dietrich, Theo Gross-Blotekamp, Leo Logi, Fillipi Nemer Brigante Domingues and Koray Wehr. The group won one game, lost one game, and lost the last game on a penalty shoot out!
Swimming
Brooke Swan (pictured centre below), has been selected to swim for New Zealand against two different States of Australia in the Tri Series Team in Hamilton from 4-6 October. She has worked extremely hard and we are all very proud of her. Be sure to check back for a full interview in the coming weeks.
