Year 9 Powhiri and Place Responsive Wero/Challenge
Venue: Whakatū Marae and Founders Park

Core Classes:

  • Aquila, Cygnus and Draco: Thursday 11 March
  • Pegasus and Phoenix: Friday 12 March

This event provides the opportunity for our Year 9 students to participate in a Pōwhiri at Whakatū Marae and a place responsive wero based at Founders Park. Year 9 students, student leaders, and staff will be transported via buses from Nayland College to Whakatū Marae where one house will be involved in a Pōwhiri and the other house will be participating in a place responsive wero.

Pōwhiri at Whakatū Marae

The Pōwhiri at Whakatū Marae will involve our Year 9 students and staff being welcomed on to Whakatū marae by Kaumatua and Kuia from Ngāti Koata. Students who are mana whenua have the option to sit on the mana whenua side.

The Wero/Challenge

Students will walk from Whakatū Marae to Founders Park where they will participate in a team place responsive challenge/wero. The wero will be based at Founders Park and surrounding areas and will involve exploring Founders Park, travelling to significant sites, and learning about the stories and history of our local places. There will be a teacher assigned to each checkpoint and at base (The Granary).

*Students will need to bring their lunch, a waterproof jacket, a drink bottle, and shoes appropriate for physical activity. Students are required to wear their school uniform.

Please find further details of the day attached.
