Student Leader Profile: Jaxon Marshall

Student Journalist Finn Kerby-Pinguet —

Student Leaders are involved with the planning and presentation of many events and represent the school throughout the community. As some of the busiest and well-known students at Nayland, one of their tasks is to be interrogated for the school newsletter. First up, we speak with Jaxon Marshall of the student leaders. Student Journalist Finn Kerby-Pinguet interviews.

Jaxon Marshall is first in line to be interviewed for the NayCol newsletters leader profiling this year. With every year’s new batch of student leaders comes a new series of interviews. The purpose is to introduce students to the individual leaders, to familiarize Year Nine’s with the responsibilities of student leaders and make known their role in the school.

Jaxon praises Nayland’s opportunities for growth and development, and enjoys the opportunities it gives.

What is your favourite thing about Nayland?

“I love Nayland College because it provides me with so many different opportunities and new experiences.”

What subjects are you studying this year?

“This year I'm studying statistics, outdoor education, chemistry, economics, and earth marine science (my favourite).”

What do you hope/plan to do after college?

“My plan is to go down to Otago University and study Aquaculture and Commerce.”

Student leaders are involved with many aspects of Nayland, including assemblies and representing the school in the Nelson community.

What inspired you to become a student leader?

“All through my schooling, I've loved to take leadership roles and help lead the charge, from Stoke Primary School, Broadgreen Intermediate, and Nayland College. I love to get my ideas across, and I really want to have a positive and memorable influence on the school in some way. The head students from when I was in Year 9 also had a large effect on my eagerness to become a student leader. I can remember Indigo, Sam, Finn, Vika, and Andre parading about on stage, and they were such positive and confident role models for me.”

What responsibilities do student leaders hold?

“As head students we run the student council as well as meet weekly with Mr. Wilson to discuss upcoming events and various school events/ projects. We also run every second round of assemblies and represent the school at many extra-curricular events or inter school events.”

Although anyone who isn’t in Draco would strongly disagree with his encouragement, he supports his house and rallies it towards the ultimate goal of winning the house cup.

How would you encourage your house to get involved with school events and win the house cup?

“In my first two years at Nayland, Draco, my house, won the house cup both years. It's a pretty special feeling and even though the main prize is bragging rights, these bragging rights are exercised throughout the year.”

Thanks to Jaxon for supplying an image and being interviewed.
