Ex NayCol student, Dr Nic Rawlence in BBC News
Ex Nayland student and now Paleogeneticist at Otago University, Dr Nic Rawlence disputes the claim that the dire wolf is now "de-extinct".
The dire wolf (now extinct) is possibly most famous for its fictional role in Game of Thrones, but it did exist - more than 10,000 years ago - when it roamed across the Americas. Company Colossal Biosciences has announced that it used "deft genetic engineering and ancient DNA" to breed three dire wolf puppies and to "de-extinct" the species.
But while the young wolves - Romulus, Remus, and Khaleesi - represent an impressive technological breakthrough, independent experts say they are not actually dire wolves.
One of these experts, Nic, studied Biology at Nayland and was also in the sailing team. He is now (clearly) making waves in Paleogentics circles, with some interesting thoughts about this new claim. To read the full article, visit:Experts dispute Colossal claim dire wolf back from extinction
