Team effort gets Jack to the top and centre of New Zealand

Jane Townsend - Deputy Principal —

The Learning Centre Outdoor Education class completed a team challenge with a difference two weeks ago. Their aim was to get the whole class to the summit of the Centre of New Zealand track so they could enjoy the experience and wrap-a-round views together. Once the class got to the top their task was to draw a map of the local area and to include significant landmarks with the Maori names for each place. For example, Tirohia Puke Marama is the Maori name for the Grampians.

The class ensured they stayed together by waiting at every sign and took turns pushing Jack and his wheelchair up the steep slope. Jack also got up and walked part of the way himself. If getting to the top as a team wasn't enough, the descent was even more of a challenge. It took three people to keep the wheelchair under control on the way down and required a lot of muscular power.

Susan Sinclair (Learning Support Extraordinaire) was the chief motivator for the expedition up the Centre of New Zealand track.
