Outdoor education whitewater kayaking trip

Yannis Hervel and Riley Smithers —

On the 16th and the 17th of March one of the Level 2 OED classes went on a white-water kayaking trip down on the Buller River. During the camp we had two days of action-packed fun. When we arrived on the first day we got set up and went straight onto the river, after a few hours we had a break on dryish land for lunch before continuing.

The rapids we encountered on the first day were a lot of fun and as you paddled through it the water would splash into your face. The river run we did the second day was not as challenging, however we had amazing opportunities to learn and improve our techniques and we had quite a few people flipping and getting rescued.

During the second day we had to do a river swim on grade 2 water. This meant we had to walk into a rapid, sit down and let the water take us down the river while on our backs, once we got down past the rapid, we had flip over and start swimming as hard as we can to get into the Eddie, this was all so we would know what to do if we flipped over in our kayak and had to wet exit in a rapid.

Overall, the trip was amazing and would recommend it to anyone thinking about doing outdoor ed.
