From toys to teens, teaching a life long endeavour for Nayland's North American recruit.

Duncan McKinlay —

Whew! We are almost there, but there still hasn't been enough weeks to profile all the amazing 'new' teachers that joined our staff this year. Today we say a happy Thanksgiving hello to Californian import Amanda Wharton.

Where were you born and where did you grow up?

I was born in San Diego, California, USA and grew up in a small desert town in Arizona called Mohave Valley.

Where else have you lived besides Nelson?

In addition to San Diego and Mohave Valley, I also lived in Las Vegas, Nevada, where I went to university. In New Zealand, I’ve lived in Kerikeri and Paihia before heading down to Nelson this year.

Why did you decide to be a teacher – and what drew towards becoming an English teacher in particular?

I always knew I wanted to be a teacher; it all started in my childhood bedroom teaching my stuffies the things I had learned in school. I always loved reading and writing, and was good at it, so going into English seemed like a no-brainer.

What do you like about teaching, and teaching at Nayland specifically?

I love that every day and every period is different, even when I’m teaching the same thing. I love all the different personalities that I get to work with, those of students and colleagues alike.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

Mainly, I love hanging out with my wee boy and husband. I enjoy going to the beach and river—anything outdoors really. Reading a book at the beach is my zen zone. I love to travel, hike, and swim. We watch a lot of movies and shows, as well. Naps are also really cool, although they don’t happen as often anymore.

What were you like as a student at school?

I was obviously really awesome and cool.
Really, though, I was studious and athletic, playing volleyball and swimming competitively. I had a few close friends, but I mulled around a lot, hanging out with lots of different types of people.

Question from Geri (last interviewee) If you could have half an hour with anyone, past or present, who would it be and why?

Good question, Geri! Hmm...This isn’t very sophisticated, but I think it would be really fun to hang out with Paul Rudd. He just seems like a fun, easy-going guy.

Give me one question to ask the next teacher we profile…

What are your top three favourite films of all time?
