Exploring the dimensions of hauora

Abbe West —

Term Two and we’re enjoying being able to be more ‘physical’ again. Y9 students in Physical Education and Health classes this term are learning about fitness and nutrition in today’s world.

We focus on realistic and practical steps we can all make to improve these aspects in our life and why these changes could be so beneficial to all the 4 dimensions of our Hauora.

Some of the common learnings we are hearing students exclaim at the moment:-

  • "I didn’t know there was that much sugar in an ‘energy drink’" – up to 10 teaspoons in some of those cans.
  • "I can't touch my toes!" – flexibility allows for greater range of motion and reduces likelihood of injury.
  • "So its ok to eat Carbohydrates" – as per MOH recommendations a diet containing a range of food groups is beneficial.
  • "That was actually quite fun" – learning about the why and ways to improve physical fitness is relevant to all.
