Nayland College —

Prior to lockdown there were some fantastic sporting achievements that we would love to still celebrate and acknowledge. Well done to each of you!

Sam Moimoi

Earlier in the year we acknowledged Sam's accomplishment in being one of three Nayland College students selected to join the Waimea Combined first XV team. Today we want to celebrate Sam's incredible achievement in being the first Nayland College student to be capped.

Capping takes place after playing twelve games and Sam has been in the starting lineup for every single game which is another great achievement for the 16 year old.

For Sam, one of the incredible highlights was getting to play his capping game on home ground at Nayland College, especially in his first year of first XV.

"Having this achievement was no easy thing," he said. "I had to miss out on a lot for rugby, there was a lot of sacrifice just to get to that position. But I didn't want a handout, I wanted to make something for myself and represent the school, to fight to own my own position. I also wanted to represent our school, one that has really supported me. I felt proud coming into the team being a Nayland College student."

When asked what would he would say to other students he replied, "There's no easy way around it. Take the challenges straight on and take pride in what you do! Your team may not be the best in the competition, but hard work, determination, loyalty and honour are what counts. School does so much for you. I'm grateful for Nayland."

Well done Sam and we wish you all the best for your future games!

Earlier in the term Hollie McKay and Kate Bryant trialed and were selected to represent Tasman in the Under 18 Women's Tasman hockey team. The Under 18 Tasman team comprises of Blenheim, Nelson and West Coast players. They played a preliminary tournament in Christchurch, and won all 3 games. They then went to the 2021 Vantage National Under 18 Women's Tournament in Wellington, and placed 10th overall out of 21 teams. Well done Hollie and Kate! And thank you to Keryn McKay for supplying the photo and results!
