Ki-o-Rahi

Bruno Watkins —

This week Nayland hosted the regional junior Ki-o-Rahi tournament.

This is a significant event on the Māori calendar across Whakatū. We had over 14 teams enter across the different grades which was a phenomenal turnout. It was fantastic to see a range of students from across our communities participating in game that has been revitalised over the past two decades. Those participants did a great job in upholding the mana and essence of the game which stems from a story of conflict resolution. That whanaungatanga that was created between the local kura was a highlight.

Nayland had three teams - ko rua Tāne teams (2 boys teams), ko tahi Wāhine (1 girls side).

The Year 9 boys did well in their pool play but did not progress to the playoffs.

Year 10 boys did very well in their pool play coming second, which progressed them through to the semi final against Nelson Boys College. Although they didn't win this game, they placed 3rd equal in the tournament.

The wāhine won all of their three games against Nelson College for Girls, winning the round robin and winning the girls competition on the day.
