"Democracy wasted on the young"
The last Thursday of term 3 saw the return of the annual staff verses student debate. This Nayland tradition pitches a group of teachers against the Senior Debating Team.
This year the senior students were represented by Andre Castaing, Indigo Levitt and Fynn Sawyer. The team are all experienced debaters and have competed together since they were in Year 9.
The teachers were represented by Mr Lineham, Mr McKinlay and Ms Bloomfeld, another experienced group who are themselves veterans of past student verses staff debates.
The topic this year was "This house believes that democracy is wasted on the young." The students were affirming this topic.
In a closely fought battle, the students emerged victorious.
Mr McKinlay, who also co-ordinates debating at Nayland College, praised the confidence and eloquence of the student team, but questioned the judges decision.
I'm not going to say the best team won, but a very good team won.
