Culture Counts

Lani Kalapu, Taea Teiria, Tiaki Sharp, Stella Afitu & Juahna Hura —

This year's newly established Cultural Committee have been working hard to lead positive change. The group's vision is centred around supporting Nayland College to be culturally diverse and inclusive with a specific focus on ensuring that principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi are upheld.

Some of the wonderful mahi that has been underway thus far includes:

  • Actively promoting the various Pasifika Language weeks and providing educational resources for ākonga and kaiako to engage with
  • Supported the unveiling of the tinorangatiratanga flag during the Matariki celebration
  • Working with the technology department to design te reo Māori signage for the main student bathrooms
  • Creating bilingual Hua tickets and class release forms with Deputy Principal Rowan Taigel
  • Supporting this years A&P show
  • Assisted with the Stoke-Tahunanui Kāhui Ako Matariki Celebration.

They will also be leading the Nayland College Cultural week which takes place in Week 2 of Term 3 which aims to celebrate the value and diversity that different cultures bring to Aotearoa.

If you are a teacher or student and value culture, then please come and join us. We meet regularly during lunch time every Monday. Nau mai haere mai.

Fa’afetai lava,
