Fabian’s Fantastic Frisbee Fascination
Nayland student Fabian Strauch’s obsession with niche sport Ultimate Frisbee has landed himself a spot in the New Zealand U24 training squad.
While the sport is little known, it packs a big punch and has an increasing player base around the disk-shaped world.
For individuals who haven’t heard of ultimate frisbee, Fabian himself describes it as “Knock-off NFL”.
“You throw and catch a frisbee, with a goal of catching it in an end zone, awarding a point to the team. The team with the most points wins.” Fabian is particularly good at this.
Fabian has landed himself in a New Zealand under-24 training squad, meaning he will meet with frisbee fanatics from across the country regularly to partake in training sessions. The first training was in Wellington over ANZAC weekend, where Fabian attended.
One training squad wasn’t good enough for Fabian, so he has landed himself in both the mixed U24 and open (men’s) U24 squad. This is an impressive effort, and Fabian has the whole year-group behind him.
“We find Fabian’s frisbee achievements inspiring.” – Calum Petre, fanatic Fabian supporter.
Fabian is buzzing at the opportunity and looking forward to telling the year-group all about it.
