Festival inspires many

Nayland College was pleased to be able to work alongside The Ministry of Inspiration again to host the INSPIRE Festival during mid-term break.

By the end of the two-day event over 670 Year 5–8 students from across the Upper South Island had experienced hands-on learning in a way that is not always possible during a regular school day. The response from participating students and their whānau was, again, overwhelmingly positive.

Many of the workshops were in block 2, which has recently been renovated and the presenters really enjoyed being in our new modern learning environments. They were so impressed by the 100+ amazing student volunteers who were mainly from Nayland College. These students gave up one or two days of their holidays to help run or assist in workshops.

Nayland College staff ran workshops on Survival in the Outdoors, Make your own Western Movie, Getting close up with Plankton and Giant Bubbles and Balloons. We were also fortunate enough to have past and present students from Nayland College, Nelson College and Garin College organise and run engaging workshops.

30% of those who attended were on partial or full scholarships and events like this cannot happen without a huge input from sponsors (Strawbridge Accounting, Switch Electrical, Nelson Science Society, Plant and Food Research, and Nelson Bus Lines) and volunteers from across the community.

Nayland College and The Ministry of Inspiration would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who assisted and gave so willingly to help make 2019 INSPIRE another special event.

Here are the thoughts of three of our Nayland students, Maia, Amy and Rain, who helped out at the event:

"For the INSPIRE Conference we had chosen to help out with the 3D doodle pens, which involved helping the kids form 3D shapes with the doodle pens, and help with any complications that happened with the pens. The whole day proved to be a challenging but satisfying task. By the end of the day we had taken away memories that are sure to bring us back for the next year. The kids were wonderful to work with and their enthusiasm was outstanding. I'm sure all three of us will remember the INSPIRE Conference as a positive and rewarding experience."
