English Language Learning (ESOL)

Madlen Kunath —

Students learn to communicate in English using all language skills (listening, reading, speaking, writing, presenting, viewing).

When

Full Year, Semester 1, Semester 2

Students may join the course throughout the year, however, this will be decided on a case by case basis and is dependent on the class size and language level.

Subject Area(s)

ESOL, English Language Learning

This English Language Learning course is available to all English language learners (ELLs). The students can be new migrants to New Zealand or International Fee Paying students, either prior to or after their arrival to New Zealand. The ESOL programme recognises the learning needs of each student while working together on a variety of topics appropriate for the participating learners.

According to the New Zealand Curriculum Framework, “Learners should be able to engage with and enjoy language in all its varieties.” English language learners will also have opportunities to experience, understand and appreciate the bicultural heritage of New Zealand (New Zealand and Maori Culture).

Topics covered will be negotiated with students at the beginning of the course and incorporated according to students’ needs and interests. The programme will be aimed primarily at beginner to intermediate level students of English and will include language study, cultural topics, everyday language as well as subject-specific language to be able to participate in their main subjects.

Requirements

Some prior learning of English is an advantage.

For sitting NCEA credits (Levels 1-3), students need to have achieved an equivalent to the ELLP Foundation Stage.

Students will need access to a device (laptop preferable), headset and a quiet working space.

Students will be assessed at the beginning of the course to ensure they are placed in the appropriate level.

Assessment

Regular homework and teacher's feedback on submitted work.

Vocabulary quizzes using Quizlet (students need to sign up for a free account).

As this is a multi-level course, students will be able to learn together but will be assessed according to their level.

If appropriate, internal assessments can also come from a range of NCEA standards based on the experience, individual learning goals and interests of students, including reading, writing, listening and speaking.
