Course: The Odyssey - Homeric Culture (NCEA L2 - Classical Studies)

This course will examine the culture and beliefs of those living in Ancient Greece through the journey of the hero Odysseus as he returns home from the Trojan War. Why and how does this classic work of literature continue to resonate with us over 2000 years after its composition?

As we examine the trials of Odysseus on his treacherous journey home to his beloved family we gain insight into the ideas and values of the classical world. Aspects of this ancient society that are considered, range from, gender roles to social and cultural traditions, including religious beliefs. Students will develop an analytical perspective that will allow them to consider the reality of another society and culture.

Requirements

Anyone wanting to take this course will need to fully participate in ongoing online discussion, whether through social media type platforms or in the video conference. Independent reading and participation in group related learning platforms are a vital component of this course.

Assessment

This course provides an excellent platform of understanding to underpin many other aspects of the Classical World. NCEA assessment is in the form of an external examination for AS 91200 -- Examine ideas and values of the Classical World.

About the Teacher

Vicky Collins has been teaching Classical Studies at Year 12, Year 13 and Scholarship level for 13 years. This is the first year that Vicky has been teaching a full course on line, and is enjoying the new teaching platform. Vicky is very passionate about the Classical World with a particular interest in all things Roman.
