Student Stories - Following my passion

Elish Skeet —

Eilish tells us about her experience in taking Beginner's Korean in 2018.

안녕하세요, 저는 엘리쉬예요. 그리고 저는 솔웨이 칼리지에 다녀요.

Hello, I’m Eilish Skeet and I go to Solway College. I am a year 10 student studying Beginners Korean.

I first found my love for Korean last year at school. I go to boarding school and one day when I was having dinner, a girl who was from Korea was telling us how to say different things in Korean. Ever since then I have been eager to learn as much as I could about the language and Korea itself. I started teaching myself how to read and write in Korean. Through the NetNZ beginners Korean, I was given the opportunity to learn so much more.

At first, I was very nervous to start with my video lessons and just speaking Korean in general. It was my first time doing anything like this and I had no clue when I should speak, what buttons to press or what to do when I had a question, but in fact, it was a lot easier than I expected. My first lesson, we went over everything. The Korean page, who to contact, what we will be learning etc. My e-dean was always there for me and with just a flick of a message, I was able to contact a member of the NetNZ crew. Now, I have become more confident in not only my work and Korean, but myself too. I don’t hesitate when asked to speak and I feel proud with the work I do. I have taken away the skill of speaking another language and the appreciation for another culture.

With NetNZ I am able continue with my passion and have the amazing opportunity to meet new people along the way. I heard about NetNZ through my school just as may others have. I would agree a thousand times over if someone was thinking about joining the NetNZ community. Not only do you take away the knowledge of the subject you are learning, but you take away an immense amount of life skills. Self-management, confidence, the ability to ask for help and new friendships. These are just the beginning. For those of you who wonder if NetNZ is the right choice, I say go for it. With this, you can go anywhere.
