Course: Programming and Computer Science (NCEA L3 – Digital Technology)

Trevor Storr —

This course will explore advanced programming techniques and Computer Science concepts.

When:

Full Year (Semester 1 & 2)

Subject Area(s)

Digital Technology

NCEA L3

In this course students will have the opportunity to develop a significant personal programming project as well as understand an area of Computer Science in detail. The course is targeted heavily towards programming and requires hard work. It is very rewarding, though and many previous students have gone on to study this subject at university or polytechnic.

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • Understand and use programming techniques and conventions such as methods, classes, data structures and error handling.

  • Manage themselves and use recognised tools for managing a complex programming project including tools for planning the project, managing workflow and versioning of code.

  • Understand and explain an area of Computer Science taken from: complexity and tractability, computer vision, big data, computer graphics, formal languages, network communication protocols.

Requirements

Previous experience of computer programming. This could be gained by taking appropriate courses at NCEA L1 or L2 or through experience gained independently - for example as a hobby.

Assessment

Assessments are selected from the standards below. The expectation is that no more than 18 credits will be assessed
