Course: Mathematics with Calculus and Probability (NCEA L2 - Mathematics)

Robin Knox —

Mathematics can be defined as the study of patterns, order and structure. A course in Level 2 Mathematics equips students for studies in most other areas of life. Studying Mathematics at this level develops reasoning, an ability to formulate and apply strategies, and to solve problems.

When:

Semester 2

Subject Area(s):

Level 2 Mathematics with Calculus and Probability

This course focuses on the Mathematics strands of the Mathematics and Statistics Curriculum

Mathematics can be defined as the study of patterns, order and structure. A course in Level 2 Mathematics equips students for studies in most other areas of life. Studying Mathematics at this level develops reasoning, an ability to formulate and apply strategies, and to solve problems.

The second semester of this course will cover two external standards. Applying Calculus Methods in solving problems gives students an introduction to the whole field of Calculus. Applying Probability Methods in solving problems introduces students to the wide and varied field of Probability. Together with the external standard in Algebra, which will be reviewed in this course, these standards combine to prepare students to study Calculus or Mathematics at Level 3.

Requirements

A Graphics Calculator is essential, preferably a Casio.

Walker Maths books in Calculus and Probability should be purchased and students will need an “Education Perfect” log-in.

Assessment consists of three external standards which will be assessed in November. (Students who have not completed Semester 1 of this course will only sit two external standards.)

Apply Calculus Methods in Solving Problems (AS 91262 – 5 credits)

Apply Probability Methods in Solving Problems (AS 91267 – 4 credits)

Apply Algebraic Methods in Solving Problems (AS 91261 – 4 credits) – external standard to be reviewed in Term 4.

About the Teacher;

Robin Knox learned Mathematics as a small child at the dinner table. She could choose between solving maths problems with her Dad, or washing dishes with her Mum. This led to two Physics degrees from the University of Canterbury and a career in teaching Mathematics. (Her sister did the dishes and became an excellent cook, among other things).

Most recently Robin taught in Auckland at Massey High School for 15 years and St Dominic’s College for three. She loves teaching Mathematics to students of any age, but particularly at Level 2, because she believes that Level 2 Maths is an essential skill for everyone, and should be a part of almost all career planning.
