Course: The Media and Society (NCEA L3 - Media Studies

Students explore how the media operates within societal contexts and how they themselves can understand the place of media in society.

Students study, and apply, media language and media texts. The analysis of the content of media texts, using appropriate media terminology, gives students the ability to understand how meanings are created in text. Students learn to make media products that can entertain, inform, and challenge.

Students will explore and evaluate how technology informs media, how different media present issues, as well as write a media product to meet the requirements of a brief. The course offered in the second semester (name...) will see students plan and craft a media product for a particular audience and publication.

Requirements

Students will be expected to fully participate in online discussions, sharing their own media interests and perspectives on a range of media industries, issues around these media industries, and technologies that inform them. Students will be expected to research media industries

Assessment

This module will see students undertake two NCEA media studies standards AS91496 A significant development in a media industry and AS91497 Write a media product to meet the requirements of a brief. Students can also use AS91496 to inform an external exam paper AS91490 Understanding an aspect of a media industry.

About the Teacher

Michael Clark lives in Ashburton and has been a teacher at Ashburton College for 12 years, teaching English and Media Studies. Michael studied English, History and Law at University and has long had an interest in all aspects of media. Michael is a keen skier and enjoys tennis, squash.
