Course: Te Reo Māori (NCEA L1 - Te Reo Māori - Languages

The aim of this programme is that students can converse with understanding and confidence and use a range of strategies for learning te reo to communicate with others in situations where te reo and tikanga Maori are predominate.

They can use basic language patterns spontaneously, show a willingness to experiment with new language and read independently; and can write short passages, personal letters and simple formal letters.

Study of Maori Language offers many areas for graduates to pursue careers in; teaching, research, archives, administration, policy advice, health work and social work. Knowledge of Maori is increasingly expected and required of those seeking to study in Postgraduate courses at University.

This course encourages effective communication in listening, speaking/presenting, reading/viewing and writing. The grammar, language and themes you studied in Year 9 and Year 10 are revised and extended and new themes are studied:

Food Gathering Preparing & Presenting Food Tikanga me kawa

Sport & cultural activities Maori Creative Arts Health & Well-Being

Famous Maori People Entertainment (TV, music etc) Tangihanga/Powhiri

During Year 11 students will cover levels 4 to 7 of Te Aho Arataki Marau Curriculum Guidelines for Teaching and Learning Te Reo Maori in English-medium Schools; the achievement objectives, language and cultural aspects which form the basis of the NCEA Level One achievement standards.

Requirements

Students need to have successfully completed a Beginners level (Y9/10) Te Reo Māori programme

 $20.00 registration for Internet website ‘Language Perfect’ for NCEA L1 vocabulary learning.

Assessment

The Four NCEA Assessment Standards at this level offer 28 credits in total.

There are 4 internal standards; Writing with Resources and Speaking; Whakapapa; Powhiri and TWO external standards; Writing and Reading Comprehension assessed in an end of year exam totalling 12 credits.
