Course: Life in the Classical World through Art and Architecture (NCEA L3 - Classical Studies)

This course offers students an insight into Classical Mythology, Politics, and Religion, through examination of how they are depicted in art and architecture of Classical Greece and Rome. Students will investigate the ideologies illustrated in an artwork of their choice.

Part One: Messages of Empire - understanding and discussion of the political ideologies of the Roman Empire which are communicated in its art and architecture.

Part Two: Visual Vessels of Ancient Greece - understanding and discussion of the religious and mythological ideologies of Ancient Greece which are communicated in its Vase Painting.

Requirements

Anyone wanting to take this course will need to fully participate in ongoing online discussion, both through the platform for this course’s community and in the online Meet. This course does require independent research and sound literacy skills. There will be revision Meets in Term 4 in preparation for the external examination.

Assessment

This course is assessed through

1. an NCEA Internal Assessment based on independent research and a written report: AS 91397 Demonstrate an understanding of the significant ideologies of the classical world; and

2. an NCEA External examination: AS 91395 Analyse the significance of a work(s) of art in the classical world.

About the Teacher

Rebecca Jeffery-Jones has had a passion for things Ancient Greek and Roman, since she was told the myths of the Greeks and Romans when she was tiny. She has been teaching Classical Studies over the last 22 years, including seven years online.
