Course: Combined language and culture skills at the emergent communication stage and survival skills stage (Foundation Japanese - Y10)

The aim of the course is to consolidate the four skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking so that students develop fluency in communication and prepare for NCEA Level One.

Japan has the third largest economy in the world after the United States, China and is the eighth most widely spoken language in the world today.
In recent years trade and cultural ties between New Zealand and Japan have expanded, and so to has a demand for secondary students with a sound knowledge of Japanese language and culture.
This course offers to write simple phrases and sentences from Level 1 to 4 of Japanese in the New Zealand Curriculum.
Level 4 will focus on the topics of zoo, health, family and town. The final topic will be on eating and drinking.

Requirements

Students should be able to recognise, write Hiragana and Katakana scripts and make complex sentences with adjective and noun ending. Completion of module 1 is highly recommended.

Assessment

There is NO NCEA Standard offered in this course. Assessment will take place regularly in the form of unit tests in listening, reading, writing. There is an oral assessments each in speech and interaction. You will be given a mark for “Achievement” on your report.

About the Teacher

Koichi Tomita has been teaching Japanese in New Zealand since I immigrated to New Zealand in 2000. I am a Japanese native speaker and am glad to be a part of a learning community to contribute to an awesome relationship between New Zealand and Japan. I am passionate about football and I did an interpreter role for Japanese women's national football team when they played against Football Ferns in Wellington in June, 2018.
