Course: Let's go on vacation (NCEA L2 - Japanese)

This course continues on from the first semester course - Exchange Student in Japan. The focus in this semester is on travel and tourism, leisure activities and festivals.

 In this course students will look at family and school life in Japan, make comparisons with life in NZ and share their opinions with justification. 

Topics will include: Travel/Tourism, Free-Time, Festivals and Celebrations.
The aim is to further develop students proficiency and communicative competencies - both orally and written. Students will be supported and encouraged to look for ways to expand and develop their language. The focus is on communication as well as the grammar and communication functions needed to enable them to communicate freely in Japanese.
This semester will also focus on the skills and language needed to succeed in the external achievement standards in November.

Requirements

Completion of the Level 2 Japanese course in Semester one (or at the discretion of the teacher).

Assessment

Students will continue to work on their writing portfolios (and interaction portfolios for those that have opted to do so).
Achievement standard 9134: Interact using spoken Japanese to share information and justify ideas and opinions in different situations (5 credits).
Achievement Standard 91137: Write a variety of text types in Japanese to convey information, ideas, and opinions in genuine contexts (5 credits).

There will also be an option of a reassessment opportunity for the prepared speech for those that require it.

The focus this semester is also on preparations for the external examinations:

Achievement Standard 91133: Demonstrate understanding of a variety of spoken Japanese texts on familiar matters (5 credits)

Achievement Standard 91136: Demonstrate understanding of a variety of written and/or visual Japanese text(s) on familiar matters (5 credits)

NOTE: Students wishing to do the two external NCEA exams in November will need to complete both semester one and two.

About the Teacher

Bronwyn Thomson is currently based at Otago Girls High School as TIC Japanese. She completed her Japanese degree at the University of Otago, and then lived in Sapporo, Japan where she worked as an assistant English teacher at a senior high school. After returning to New Zealand she taught at Marlborough Girls’ College for 9 years, then spent seven years working at the University of Otago Language Centre and Foundation year as a student advisor, often providing translation support for Japanese students. For the last 3 years she has been teaching Japanese at Otago Girls High School, and for two years with NetNZ for level 2 & 3.
