Course: Exchange Student in Japan (NCEA L2 - Japanese)

This course continues to build on the language and communication functions covered in NCEA Level one with the aim of developing more confidence in oral and written communication in Japanese.

Japanese Language and Culture

NCEA L2

In this course students will look at family and school life in Japan, make comparisons with life in NZ and share their opinions with justification.
Topics will include: Family Life, Food, Education, Free-Time

Students will look at both language and cultural aspects.

Requirements

NCEA Level one Japanese (or sit a placement test at the discretion of the teacher)

Assessment

Students will complete assessment for Achievement Standard 91135: Give a spoken presentation in Japanese that communicates information, ideas and opinions (4 credits). This is a two minute speech, and must include language up to and including level 7.
They will also begin work on Achievement Standard 91137: Write a variety of text types in Japanese to convey information, ideas, and opinions in genuine contexts (5 credits). This assessment continues into semester 2 as it is a portfolio of writing and requires several pieces of writing.

Optional: Students that are able to work with a partner are also able to begin work towards Achievement standard 91134: Interact using spoken Japanese to share information and justify ideas and opinions in different situations (5 credits). Again this assessment work may continue in semester two as it is also a portfolio.

NOTE: Students wishing to do the two external NCEA exams in November will need to complete both semesters one and two.

About the Teacher

Bronwyn Thomson is currently based at Otago Girls High School as TIC Japanese. She completed her Japanese degree at the University of Otago, and then lived in Sapporo, Japan, where she worked as an assistant English teacher at a senior high school. After returning to New Zealand she taught at Marlborough Girls’ College for 9 years, then spent seven years working at the University of Otago Language Centre and Foundation year as a student advisor, often providing translation support for Japanese students. For the last 3 years she has been teaching Japanese at Otago Girls High School, and for two years with NetNZ for level 2 & 3.
