Wild Bus to Sinclair Wetlands - Te Nohoaka o Tukiauau 🚍 🏅

Wild Dunedin Wild Bus Tour —

On Tuesday 23 April depart 9.30am from the Octagon close to the i-SITE visitors centre for the first Wild Bus Tour with your tour guides Nature Chasers, Taylor Davies-Colley and Samuel Purdie to Sinclair Wetlands. The bus tour is for people not normally able to drive by car to Sinclair Wetlands. The bus is free but a koha for the wetlands would be most appreciated. The bus will return to the Octagon by 1.30pm.

Each Wild Bus tour has a special guest and for this first trip a special event.  At 10.30am upon arrival at Te Nohoaka o Tukiauau you will join the Wild Dunedin Committee and guests to be invited upon Ngai Tahu land for a Mihi Whakatau.

A Mihi Whakatau is a welcoming ceremony for the official opening of the festival by representatives from Ōtakou Rūnanga and will be followed by a morning tea. Prt of this ceremony will be singing a waiata that will be practiced on the bus.

After the informal welcome we will have a cup of tea or coffee before heading out with Tuna (long fin eel)  specialist Terry Broad for a  guided walk and talk to  enable you to appreciate just how vital a healthy wetland eco-system is.

The trip to Sinclair Wetlands will take at least 45 minutes so just after 12.30 you will be climbing aboard the bus again.   If you do not have time to eat lunch make sure the lunch is suitable to be eaten while travelling back on the bus.

The wetlands are one of the largest privately owned wetland reserves in New Zealand.  Check out the birds, the plants and critters that live in this wonderful wild wetland.  Get to meet Glen Riley the live-in co-ordinator who works with volunteers from all over the world to help restore the wetland by planting native trees and trapping predators.

This is a Kiwi Guardians Wild Dunedin Medal event. Children attending will be given a leaflet by your Wild Bus  guides on how to redeem a medal on www.wilddunedin.nz website.

We wish to thank Good Company Tours for supporting our initiative to enable more people to get out and about amongst nature in Wild Dunedin.
