Resources Available for Maths
This week Minister Stanford announced that a list of four Ministry funded resources would be available to support ‘Structured Approaches to Maths’.
These were listed as Prime, Numicon, Oxford, Maths No Problem.
It is not a requirement to use these resources and you can continue to use other resources that align with the revised mathematics and statistics learning area.
You can order these resources from October 21st, 2024. If you wish, you can order through different providers for different phases. The Ministry has committed to funding these resources for two years. It is important to note that the resource provision may become the school’s responsibility to finance after this period.
Pou Rua raised concerns with the Ministry about ordering through a pre-populated database. Although it allows for the use of different resources for different phases of learning, it does not take into account variation of children’s learning within a phase of learning. Nor does it consider those children working outside of their chronological level.
During our recent webinar, we emphasised the importance of principals understanding what effective maths teaching and learning looks and sounds like, regardless of existing programs or resources that are received. Here is the link again to the edited version of the recording from the end of last term.
