Advancing Principal Professional Development

Work continues on the Principals’ Development map for sustainable Principal Leadership. Now, more than ever, we need strong leadership for teaching, learning, and change management. This is the task of principals. We also need to ensure that the workforce is sustainable into the future.

This work is occurring in partnership with Tim White (Chief Leadership Advisor in the Ministry). Regional and local associations have access to promote both their association and association events on the Principals’ Development Map. Click on the provider tab to find out how easy this is to do.

We are also advocating for a mechanism to provide a quality assurance system for Leadership PLD Providers. This would enhance the offerings currently on the Principals’ Development map and give us a principal pathway ‘one stop shop’ for PLD. It would ensure that outside providers are meeting the ‘Gold Standard’ that we all expect. We expect that the panel that undertakes this work will include members of the Peak Bodies.

Although it will not be compulsory to choose a PLD provider who has met the ‘Gold Standard Assurance’, overseas jurisdictions have found that, over time, principals and organisations tend to choose only providers who have been accredited.

We will continue to work with The Educational Workforce Supply and Leadership Team, and with Tim White to develop a fit for purpose Aspiring Principals’ Programme (Leadership Advisory Team on Aspiring Principals) and will update you as progress is made.

In time, we will require an Aotearoa New Zealand Principal Leadership Centre because all of these pieces of work are linked. The Minister has given us assurance that NZPF is critical in leading this work.
