Fostering Leadership Excellence Between Principals
Introduction
The New Zealand Principals’ Federation’s (NZPF) Global Partnership Principal Exchange (GPPE) is a professional learning initiative designed to strengthen leadership practices and foster cross-cultural collaboration between school principals in New Zealand and other countries/states, currently Ontario and South Australia.
This programme provides principals with opportunities to:
Share knowledge and innovative practices
Be immersed in new learning environments
Conduct inquiry-based research addressing leadership challenges.
This exchange programme empowers principals to broaden their perspectives, develop actionable strategies, and build enduring professional networks across the Tasman.
Ontario Exchange Timeline 2026
Application Period: Opens August 1, 2026, applications due October 16, 2026
Participant Matching: Completed by November 6, 2026
Exchange Period: Flexible dates within the following school year, based on participants’ availability and school schedules

South Australia exchange timeline to be announced. Application forms for both programmes will become available on the NZPF website once open for applications.
Programme Objectives
Strengthen Leadership Skills: enhance principals’ ability to lead in diverse and evolving educational contexts
Foster Cross-Cultural Collaboration: build international partnerships and share innovative strategies to address common challenges
Promote Reflective Practice: enable principals to engage in self-reflection and adopt new approaches to leadership and teaching
Support Inquiry-Based Learning: encourage participants to investigate a specific leadership or educational challenge during their exchange.

Programme Structure
Exchange Period:
New Zealand principals participate in a one-week exchange programme, and host their fellow principal for a one-week exchange.
Participants job-shadow their exchange partner and are immersed in the day-to-day realities of school leadership.
Eligibility and Selection:
Open to current, permanent principals in New Zealand.
Applicants complete a personal profile survey to facilitate matching with a suitable exchange partner.
A small selection team reviews applications to ensure alignment between participants’ professional interests and goals.
Hosting and Logistics:
Exchange partners host one another in their home regions, providing accommodation and meals.
Participants cover their own travel costs.
Inquiry-Based Research:
Participants identify a specific area of focus for their exchange, allowing them to conduct research and apply insights to their own context.
Participants provide a short report to NZPF to share their learning and findings from their exchange.
Administrative Process
NZPF Role:
Coordinate programme promotion, participant selection, and exchange logistics
Provide participants with resources, including waiver forms, travel planning templates, and inquiry guidelines
Collect and share feedback to improve the programme in subsequent years
Collect and share exchange partners’ reports on the NZPF website
