Winter Tournament Week

Matthew Porteous —

Hear from our ākonga as they describe in their own words the break down of Winter Tournament Week 2024.

Netball

Our senior A girls competed at the Lower North Island Secondary Schools netball tournament which took place in Napier. Although we placed 25th, our placing did not reflect the results of our games as we played 10 games in total over the course of the 5 days, winning 7 and only losing 3. Regardless, the girls had a fun week and it was a great first experience for many. It was a great final tournament as we said farewell to many of our year 13 players.

Football Boys 1st XI

The football team played in the Trident Cup in Wellington this week and came 10th place out of 18 teams. We had 4 wins, 2 draws and 1 loss. This was the first time the 1st XI boys had attended a tournament in 4 years. It was a fun and great experience for everyone involved.

Football Girls 1st XI

On the 1st of September, the Girls 1XI football team headed up to Palmerston North for the Grant Jarvis tournament. We played 7 games over the week. 2 wins and 5 losses. The girls fought really hard all week and most of the games could have gone either way. We finished 18th out of the 23 teams involved in the tournament. Overall it was a very fun and competitive week and they can’t wait to do it again next season.

Hockey Girls

Our girls 1st XI hockey team headed away to the Eveline Hankers Memorial Trophy tournament in Stratford last week. The whole team really backed each other up and worked together to put in an incredible performance to finish off the season strong. We played 6 games with 1 win, 2 draws and 3 losses which placed us 8th out of 15 teams in a tier above our grade. Our girls had a great last game with exciting strokes to farewell our year 13. An awesome experience for our girls and an effort to be proud of!

Hockey Boys

The boys 1st XI hockey team played in the Lower North Island Tier 4 Hockey Tournament which was held up in Gisborne. The boys had many great games. Ultimately they were placed 4th. It was an amazing experience, all the boys had a good time and we can't wait to bring it home next year.

Basketball Senior Boys

Our Senior A Boys Basketball team competed in the Zone 3 Secondary Schools Regional Basketball Tournament in Palmerston North from the 3rd to 7th of September. The boys placed 17th and ended the tournament with 3 straight wins against some local Wellington schools. Although the boys were unable to get the results they expected due to outside factors, they still performed extremely well and can say they made the school proud. This was a great week for the team and a great final tournament for the Year 13.

Badminton Boys

The Newlands 1 Boys badminton team played in the New Zealand National Secondary School Championships this week. A loss in the group stage to eventual winners Otago Boys meant our strong team was unable to medal and we finished 6th out of 22 teams in division 2. Though they had a heartbreaking loss against the victors, they still gave it their all and had the closest match against Otago Boys in the tournament. Even though we couldn’t grasp silverware, the boys had a fun time and tried their best.

Badminton Girls

The Newlands 1 girls badminton team played in the New Zealand National Secondary School Championships. We came 1st in Division 2, winning the finals tie 4-2. We all had a lot of support from each other and it was a great experience overall.
